If you consider “warfare toys,” you most likely wouldn’t instantly consider artwork pairing social commentary with play, however that’s what War Toys, a nonprofit arts and media group, is all about.
Based by photographer Brian McCarty, the group is “dedicated to gathering and disseminating youngsters’s firsthand accounts of warfare by means of art-therapy-based collaborations within the subject.” Backed by a board of administrators and advisors with ties to Hasbro, Mattel, Disney, Warner Bros., Super7, and extra, Conflict Toys seeks to develop applications to advertise peace.
McCarty’s work will likely be showcased on the Photoville Festival in Brooklyn, New York Metropolis, June 3-18. The gathering highlights Conflict Toys efforts from 2011-2022 with children from Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, the West Financial institution, and the Gaza Strip. Every photograph was created in collaboration with a toddler that shared their firsthand account of warfare. A choice of pictures and the tales behind them could be considered here.
